Is my child entitled to Free School Meals/Uniform Grant?

Could Your Child Benefit from Free School Meals and Pupil Premium Funding?

At Tutshill C of E Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive, achieve their full potential and enjoy a rich and rewarding school experience.

If your child is eligible for Free School Meals (FSM), the school receives additional Pupil Premium funding from the government. This funding is separate from the Universal Infant Free School Meals available to all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, and is specifically designed to help schools provide extra support for eligible pupils.

At Tutshill, we use Pupil Premium funding to enhance learning, wellbeing and personal development through:

  • One-to-one teaching support
  • Additional classroom support
  • Small group interventions
  • Pastoral and wellbeing provision
  • Targeted tutoring
  • Resources to support mathematical development and emotional resilience
  • Enrichment opportunities and wider curriculum experiences

These initiatives help ensure that every child can flourish both academically and personally.

Additional Benefits for Eligible Families

Children registered for Free School Meals may also be eligible for additional support from the school, including:

  • Free musical tuition
  • Free school trips and educational visits
  • A school uniform bursary

Is My Child Eligible?

Currently, your child may qualify for Free School Meals if you receive one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you are not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and your annual gross income does not exceed £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
  • Universal Credit, where your household earnings are £7,400 or less per year (after tax and excluding benefits) until the end of the 2025–26 academic year

Children who receive these benefits in their own right, rather than through a parent or guardian, may also qualify.

Important Change from September 2026

From September 2026, eligibility for Free School Meals in England will be significantly expanded. All children in households receiving Universal Credit will be entitled to Free School Meals, regardless of household earnings. This change is expected to make hundreds of thousands more children eligible for support and will help more families access nutritious school meals every day.

Even if your child already receives Universal Infant Free School Meals in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, it is still important to register if you are eligible. Registering helps the school secure valuable additional funding through the Pupil Premium, which directly benefits children and their education.
